Alden, Harold Lee (1890 - 1963)
Harold Lee Alden was born on the 10 January 1890 in Chicago, Illinois. He studied at the Wheaton College, Illinois (1908 - 1912), at the University of Chicago (1912 - 1914) and at the University of Virginia (1914 - 1917).

Between 1912 and 1914 he was assistant at the Yerkes Observatory and from 1914 until 1925 assistant at the McCormick Observatory. From 1918 on he was assistant Professor at the University of Virginia, promoted to associate Professor in 1924. In 1925 Alden accepted the post of astronomer in charge at the Yale University Observatory in Johannesburg, South Africa and served as vice president of Section A in 1930 and in 1931 as president of the South African Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1932 he was president of the Astronomical Society of South Africa. Between 1945 and 1960 he was Professor at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and director of the Leander McCormick Observatory.

Two of his works (together with R. H. Habert) are on 'Gas dynamics in high-altitude rocket plumes', one of them was printed in Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 7 (1970), No. 2, p. 155-159.

Harold Lee Alden died in 1963.
