Abbe, Ernst Carl (1840 - 1905)
Ernst Carl Abbe was born in Eisenach, Germany, on the 23. January 1840
as the son of Georg Adam Abbe (1813-74), a book printer and factory worker
in that town. His mother was Elisabeth Christina (1809-57), daughter of
the weaver Joh. Georg Barchfeld (1773-1812) and his wife Sophie Wilhelmine,
née Noll (1783-1856).
In 1871 E. C. Abbe married Elisabeth Snell (1844-1914) in Jena. They had two daughters. Abbe died on the 14 January 1905 in Jena. Minor Planet (5224) Abbe is named in his honor as well as a crater on the far side of the Moon.
