2002-04-07, late afternoon
The tiles are covered
with a 1.5 inch thick pour of white dental stone, this type smells of Vanilla.
I had to pour twice since the pot only takes about 6 pounds of the mix.
Die Fliesen wurden
mit 40 mm Dentalgips vergossen, diese Variante ist weiß und riecht
nach Vanille. Es wurde in 2 Portionen gegossen, da der Pott nur etwa 3
kg der Mischung fasst.

2002-04-09, evening
The tile tool and
the blank ready for action. The tool rests on a sheet of PVC which covers
a piece of particle board. The wooden blocks hold the tool, allowing to
rotate it freely.
Das Fliesentool
und der Rohling fertig für die Arbeit. Das Werkzeug liegt auf einer
Folie, die eine MDF-Platte bedeckt. Die Holzstücke halten das Werkzeug
so fest, das es noch gedreht werden kann.

After 1.5 hours
of work (and it really is work) the tiles show first signs of wear. The
mirror lost 1/16 inch in the middle, some more hours to go. (Picture after
1 hour)
Nach 1,5 Stunden
Arbeit zeigen die Fliesen ersten Abrieb. Der Spiegel hat in der Mitte etwa
1,65 mm verloren, noch ein paar Stunden Arbeit. (Bild nach 1 Stunde).

After about 3 hours
of work the tiles show wear, but less than expected. The mirror lost 3/16
inch in the middle, still one or two hours to go to hog out the main amount
of glass. The mirror is still almost untouched at the very edge (3/8"),
which is normal at this stage.
Nach 3 Stunden Arbeit
zeigen die Fliesen Abrieb, aber weniger als erwartet. Der Spiegel hat in
der Mitte etwa 2,5 mm verloren, noch ein bis zwei Stunden Arbeit, um die
Masse des Glases wegzuschleifen. Die äusseren 10 mm sind noch fast
blank, aber das ist normal.

After ten hours
of work with the finer grits I am now using size 320. While taking the
tool off the mirror I tilted the tool and chipped the blank. Well, such
things happen and fortunately it is only a minor fault, but leaves the
blank less than perfect :-(
Nach zehn Stunden
Arbeit bin ich nun bei Korn 320. Beim Abnehmen des Fliesentools verkantete
ich und brach einen Splitter aus dem Rand (Muschelbruch). Glücklicherweise
ist er nur klein, verhindert aber einen 'perfekten' Spiegel
:-(

2002-04-26, evening
Mesuring the sagitta
with a friends tool. It turned out that the calculated data varied from
the real curve, so I had to subtract a correcting value. The best results
I get finding the focus with a wet mirror and using the sun as a light
source at 'indefinite' distance.
Messung der Tiefe
mit der Meßschraube eines Freundes. Die errechneten Werte wichen
von den tatsächlichen ab, so das ein Korrekturfaktor abgezogen werden
musste. Die besten Ergebnisse bekomme ich mit einem nassen Spiegel und
der Sonne als Lichtquelle in 'unendlicher' Entfernung.

2002-05-03, evening
While grinding
with 800 grit I got some minor and one severe scratch. To avoid grit hiding
in those small holes in the plaster tool I pitched them. Hope it helps.
In addition I reground the chamfer with finer grit (320).
Nachdem ich beim
Schleifen mit 800er Korn einige kleine und einen tiefen Kratzer bekam,
habe ich die Löcher im Gipstool mit Pech verschlossen. Hoffentlich
hilft das für die Zukunft. Ausserdem habe ich die Fase am Spiegel
mit feinerem Korn geschliffen.

The mirror after
a total of almost 18 hours: some minor scratches remain which I hope to
take care of with a last 30 min. wet of #1000 grit. Otherwise they will
remain and give proof of a handcrafted mirror. The numbers give the length
in mm.

fast 18 Stunden Arbeit: einige kleine Kratzer bekomme ich hoffentlich mit
einem letzten 30 Minuten Gang weg. Sonst müssen sie eben bleiben und
von einem handgeschliffenen Spiegel zeugen. Die Zahlen geben die Länge
in mm an.

The mirror and
the pitch tool after 3:10 polishing: almost ready for parabolizing. The
12" diameter takes some effort in working with a full size lap, but noone
said it would be easy. You can see light reflexes in the left hand part
of the mirror. So far I have discovered two minor scratches, but hope they
go away during the following work.

das Pechtool nach 3:10 Stunden: fast fertig zum Parabolisieren. Die Arbeit
mit dem 30 cm Tool ist ganz schön schwer. Links im Spiegel sind Reflexe
vom Tool zu sehen. Bisher konnte ich zwei kleine Kratzer entdecken, hoffe
aber, das sie bei der weiteren Arbeit verschwinden.

The mirror is
finally polished and figured to about l/7 wavefront error. It could still
be improved but I decided against it. Unfortunately it has three small
scratches near the center.
Der Spiegel ist
fertif und hat etwa l/7 Wellenfrontfehler. Er könnte noch verbessert
werden, aber ich lass ihn jetzt in Ruhe. Unglücklicherweise hat er
drei kleine Kratzer nahe der Mitte.
